Although this French Gothic mansion was built in 1910, the rich history of the Glidden House has been reincarnated as a Cleveland boutique hotel and a top wedding venue. This stately historic home will serve as the perfect backdrop for picturesque weddings, receptions and other events that warrant the grand splendor of the Glidden House.
Our History
Located in the original 1910 mansion, this vintage suite features a bathroom with heated floors, a separate living room and a kitchenette with a mini bar and a microwave. The Glidden House was commissioned by Francis Kavanaugh Glidden (Frank to those who knew him) and his wife Mary in 1910. Frank was the eldest son of Francis Harrigton Glidden, the famous Clevelander and founder of The Glidden Paint Company. This historical home was Frank and Mary’s private family residence. This area also features world-class entertainment at the House of Blues and incredible theater performances in Playhouse Square. Enjoy views of Lake Erie and unique landscaping as you stroll through Voinovich Bicentennial Park.

Frank was an avid reader and the custom bookcases in the library symbolizes the mantra “Knowledge over time.” In the parlor, look up and notice the Glidden “G” emblazoned on the beams. The loggia was an open air space until glass panes were added in the 1930’s. These details and symbols don’t just appear inside the home You can find fire resisting salamanders,family crests, green men, and grotesques outside which have survived for over 100 years. Attention to detail, isn’t simply part of our past, we bring it to life every day. The Glidden House stuns with its architecture and continues to impress with its amenities and features.

Bathrooms are muchbrighter with light tan wallpaper and tile, and come with shower/tub combos, magnifying mirrors, hairdryers, and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. All rooms are quiet and includeair-conditioning, coffeemakers, robes, free Wi-Fi, ironing facilities, and limited room service. Views are the hotel’slovely grounds or the university campus and surrounding areas. Adorned in classic red brick with gothic architecture spiraling from the roof to the front door, the Glidden House is a building rich with history.

The hotel is located on a corner of Case Western ReserveUniversity’s campus on Cleveland’s East Side, approximately four miles from thedowntown business district. The area is called University Circle or theCultural District due to its proximity to colleges and several museums. TheCleveland Clinic is a seven-minute drive, while walks are brief to the ClevelandBotanical Garden (two minutes), Museum of Contemporary Art (five minutes),and Cleveland Museum of Art (seven minutes). Cleveland State University’s campusis within a 15-minute drive, and the Cleveland School of Architecture and Design is asix-minute drive. Most major downtown attractions can be reached in a drive of 15 to 20minutes, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Quicken LoansArena, Progressive Field, and First Energy Stadium. The Cleveland HopkinsInternational Airport is approximately a 25-minute drive or about an hour onthe Red Line light rail system, which has a University Circle stop abouta 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Beacons of education such as Western Reserve University and the Case Institute of Technology evolved to become Case Western Reserve University. Frank and Mary supported many of these places as members, donors, and patrons. Frank and Mary lived in their home with their daughter Ida and it remained in her care until she passed away. For a time it became the home of the psychology department for CWRU before becoming a hotel. The Glidden House is on the National Register of Historic places, and the original mansion home maintains most of its historic features including the library, parlor, and loggia to be exact. We serve breakfast in these spaces now, but they have the same meaningful symbols and historic charm as they once did.
